The new AM CVn star in Hydra
نویسندگان
چکیده
High speed photometry of the new AM CVn star in Hya (previously known as SN2003aw), spectroscopically identified by Chornock & Filippenko, shows it to have a superhump period of 2041.5 ± 0.3 s. We find a range of brightness from V ∼ 16.5 to 20.3, presumably caused by variations in the rate of mass transfer. In the intermediate state the system cycles in brightness with a period of ∼ 16 h and range ≥ 0.4 mag. There are sidebands to the principal frequencies in the Fourier transform which have constant frequency difference from the superhump harmonics.

SDSS J080449.49+161624.8: a peculiar AM CVn star from a colour-selected sample of candidates
We describe a spectroscopic survey designed to uncover an estimated ∼40 AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) stars hiding in the photometric data base of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have constructed a relatively small sample of about 1500 candidates based on a colour selection, which should contain the majority of all AM CVn binaries while remaining small enough that spectroscopic identification ...
متن کاملSDSS J124058.03−015919.2: A new AM CVn star with a 37-minute orbital period
We present high time resolution VLT spectroscopy of SDSS J124058.03−015919.2, a new helium-transferring binary star identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We measure an orbital period of 37.355± 0.002 minutes, confirming the AM CVn nature of the system. From the velocity amplitudes of the accretor and the accretion stream– disc impact, we derive a mass ratio q = 0.039± 0.010. Our spectral ...
متن کاملThe long-period AM CVn star SDSSJ155252.48+320150.9
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has been instrumental in obtaining a homogeneous sample of the rare AM CVn stars: mass-transferring binary white dwarfs. As part of a campaign of spectroscopic follow-up on candidate AM CVn stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we have obtained time-resolved spectra of the g = 20.2 candidate SDSS J155252.48+320150.9 on the Very Large Telescope of the European Sou...
متن کاملShort-period AM CVn systems as optical, X-ray and gravitational wave sources
We model the population of AM CVn systems in the Galaxy and discuss the detectability of these systems with optical, X-ray and gravitational wave detectors. We concentrate on the short period (P < 1500 s) systems, some of which are expected to be in a phase of direct impact accretion. Using a self-consistent model for the star formation history and radial distribution of stars in the Galaxy plu...
متن کاملPopulation synthesis for double white dwarfs II. Semi-detached systems: AM CVn stars
We study two models for AM CVn stars: white dwarfs accreting (i) from a helium white dwarf companion and (ii) from a helium-star donor. We show that in the first model possibly no accretion disk forms at the onset of mass transfer. The stability and the rate of mass transfer then depend on the tidal coupling between the accretor and the orbital motion. In the second model the formation of AM CV...
